3 feet DO NOT = 1 metre.
(3 feet = 1 yard)
The exact conversion is
1 inch = 2.54cm
(It may come as a surprise to US Americans, but metric is the international standard, and Imperial measure – or whatever Americans call it – is derived from that – the inch is defined in centimetres)
so
5′ 7″ (5 feet 7 inches) = 5×12 + 7 = 67 inches
67 x 2.54 = 170.18 cm exactly.
But my rule of thumb, given above, is good enough for human heights, which vary by more than that during the course of a day.
